Democratic Party hopefuls for Seoul mayor continued unveiling policy proposals and carrying out grassroots outreach on the 15th. With the first joint debate scheduled for the 19th, competition among the candidates is intensifying.
Former Seongdong District Mayor Jeong Won-oh used his YouTube channel “Jeong Won-oh TV” to announce his top pledge: to transform Seoul into a “30-minute commute city,” reducing commuter fatigue by targeting an average 30-minute commute across the city.
Jeong said he would establish shared workspaces throughout Seoul and promote 10-minute station zones (areas within a 10-minute walk of a rail station). He also pledged to add bus stops within a five-minute walk and to better integrate city buses, neighborhood buses and public buses.
He urged Mayor Oh Se-hoon—whose decision to run remains uncertain after not filing for the People Power Party’s nomination—to enter the local election so voters can judge his record.
Jeong told the YouTube channel “Jang Yoon-sun’s Reporting Convenience Store” that Mayor Oh’s candidacy would give citizens an opportunity to hold what he called showy but ineffective governance to account.
Another candidate, Rep. Park Joo-min, visited Dokkaebi Market in Nowon District as part of his on-the-ground campaign. The market stop was his fifth, following visits to Songpa, Mapo, Geumcheon and Seocho districts.
Since declaring his candidacy, Park has been visiting markets across Seoul as part of a “Market Tour” series.
Rep. Jeon Hyun-hee unveiled seven major transportation pledges at the National Assembly press briefing room.
Jeon’s proposals include a phased rollout of free school transportation and free public transit, undergrounding railways and roads, innovation in advanced urban mobility including urban air mobility (UAM), creating a Seoul-style advanced AI mobility innovation district, and reforming the quasi-public bus system along with the neighborhood bus network.
The Democratic Party’s Seoul mayoral hopefuls will hold their first joint debate on SBS’s “Joo Young-jin News Briefing” on the 19th and will appear on JTBC’s “Lee Ga-hyuk Live” for a second debate on the 20th.
