The Daejeon City Council opened the first plenary session of its 295th extraordinary meeting on the 16th and launched a 10-day agenda running through the 25th.
The council will review and vote on 47 items: 21 council-initiated proposals, 24 submitted by the mayor, and 2 from the superintendent of education.
At the second plenary session on the 17th, council members will question city administration and education officials to assess major policies and current issues.
During the session, the council approved Councilor Lee Geum-seon’s resolution calling for a comprehensive reexamination of the Sin Gyeryong–Buk Cheonan power transmission-line construction project, and Councilor Kim Min-sook’s resolution urging improvements to the evaluation criteria used when selecting outlets that accept agricultural food vouchers.
Those resolutions push for reforms to the agricultural food voucher program to improve food access for vulnerable populations and call for a project reexamination in light of residents’ safety and environmental concerns associated with the long-distance transmission line.
In five-minute remarks, Councilor Hwang Kyung-ah urged activation of mandatory employment measures for people with disabilities; Councilor Lee Jae-kyung raised concerns about user charges for city gas supply facilities; and Councilor Lee Han-young called for stronger policies to boost volunteerism.
Council Chair Jo Won-hwi said, \”As economic hardship deepens, the council must give citizens reassurance through action, not declarations. We will responsibly review items in this extraordinary session to produce policy outcomes that citizens can feel.\”
