President Lee Jae-myung on March 17 ordered the rapid preparation of a \”war supplementary budget\” to support vulnerable households and exporters. Gyeonggi Province has already begun preparing to back that effort.

Governor Kim Dong-yeon convened an emergency strategy meeting that day at the provincial office with First Administrative Deputy Governor Kim Seong-jung and senior bureau and department heads to plan a supplemental budget focused on livelihoods and energy. The group reviewed the province’s fiscal position and the current status of the supplementary budget, and they discussed how to coordinate with the central government’s package.

Kim said, \”Given that the government decided on a supplementary budget amid serious tensions in the Middle East, Gyeonggi Province should adopt a clear principle of actively supporting the national package as we craft our own budget.\” He added, \”Looking at the scale of the government’s measures, Gyeonggi should also prepare a sufficiently large response to provide proactive support for households and the energy sector.\”

He directed officials to explore ways to increase tax revenue, including collecting from major delinquent taxpayers and identifying hidden tax bases.

In line with the central government’s policy to soften the economic shock from the Middle East conflict and rising oil prices and to prioritize assistance for vulnerable populations, the province will concentrate its supplemental budget review on measures for livelihoods and energy.
