People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok drew a firm line on March 22 regarding Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon’s proposal to launch an early “centrist-expansion” campaign committee, saying the committee will be formed only after nominations are finalized.

Speaking with reporters at the National Assembly that afternoon, Jang said the People Power Party will assemble a broad-based campaign team for the local elections—one best positioned to win and to earn voters’ trust.

Mayor Oh had urged starting the committee before nominations were completed, but Jang effectively rejected that suggestion by insisting the launch wait until after nominations conclude.

Earlier the same day at the party’s central office, Mayor Oh described his plan—calling it precisely a “centrist-expansion campaign committee”—and emphasized the need to launch quickly so a centrist figure could take the lead in winning the Seoul metropolitan area.

Jang also said he held a private meeting with Cho Gil-hyung, the former mayor of Chungju, who resigned his preliminary bid for governor of North Chungcheong Province in protest over rumors that former lawmaker Kim Soo-min had been preselected. Jang said he asked Cho to enter the party primary.

“I met Cho informally today and, given the party’s situation, earnestly asked him to participate in the primary so the People Power Party can nominate a candidate who wins the hearts of North Chungcheong residents,” Jang said.

He added that he has not yet received a firm answer and that, with time remaining before the primary, he will continue to do his best as party leader to persuade Cho.

On the Daegu mayoral primary method, Jang declined to outline specifics, saying only that it must be a fair process that citizens can accept.
