[Herald Economy = Reporter Kim Hyun-il] Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, who will officially announce his bid for Daegu mayor on the 30th ahead of the June 3 local elections, plans to register his residence in Siji-dong, Suseong-gu — the house where his late father lived.

Kim has opened a campaign office in a building at the Duryu intersection in Dalseo District, Daegu.

He plans to use the building’s first through third floors, with the ground floor set up as a public-facing campaign office.

Kim was born in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province, attended Daegu Gyeongbuk High School, and graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in political science.

He pulled off an upset in the 20th general election by winning the Suseong-gu A district, long regarded as Daegu’s premier political constituency.

In Daegu, Democratic Party hopefuls running in the local elections have already begun what critics call “Kim Boo-kyum marketing,” hanging banners on campaign office exteriors that show them alongside the former prime minister.

Kim is said to have solidified his decision to run after the party mounted a vigorous recruitment effort and pledged substantial support to revive Daegu’s economy.

On the 26th in Seoul, Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae met with Kim and told him, according to party sources, “I want to serve as the head of a ‘Do-It-All Center’ that will do whatever is needed for Daegu.”

Observers say the collapse of plans to administratively merge Daegu with North Gyeongsang Province, along with internal strife within the People Power Party over its Daegu mayoral nomination, also influenced his decision.

With Kim’s formal entry, the Daegu mayoral race — now 66 days away — has intensified.
