[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Popular trot singer Jang Yoon-jung has disclosed that her mother fell victim to a sophisticated voice-phishing scam.

On March 4th, KBS1’s “Let’s Live Together with Hwang Shin-hye” featured Kwon Il-yong, South Korea’s pioneering criminal profiler.

During the broadcast, Jang revealed, “My mother recently became a victim of a voice-phishing crime.” She elaborated, “All the money in her bank account was stolen. The shock was immense for her. It’s one of those situations where you think, ‘How could anyone fall for that?’ when it happens to others, but when it’s your own mother, the impact is truly devastating.”

Jang continued, “I encouraged her to talk about it openly, not to internalize the pain. When she did, we discovered that many others had experienced similar scams.”

Describing the scam’s modus operandi, Jang explained, “It started with a text message claiming her phone was malfunctioning. Ironically, my younger sibling’s phone had genuinely broken down recently. When my mother responded, the scammer must have thought they hit the jackpot. They assumed she was using someone else’s phone due to hers being broken. From that point, the fraudster manipulated my mother, and she unfortunately believed everything they said.”

“She even shared personal information without realizing the danger,” Jang added. “It wasn’t until her phone became inoperable that she grasped the situation. By then, it was too late – her phone was already compromised. She had to use emergency services to contact the police. Law enforcement quickly responded, and they later called me to the scene.”

Kwon Il-yong, the criminal profiler, emphasized the importance of involving law enforcement: “When faced with suspicious activities, always seek police assistance. Some might hesitate, thinking it’s not serious enough, but that’s a dangerous mindset. Voice-phishing scams in South Korea resulted in losses exceeding 1 trillion KRW (approximately 750 million USD) for the first time in 2025. This is a pervasive issue that can affect anyone.”
