[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Hongik University has suspended musical actor and associate professor Nam Kyung-ju from his position after police referred him to prosecutors on allegations of sexual assault.
On the 12th, Hongik University’s public relations office said that, following two personnel committee hearings, Nam—who served as an associate professor in the Department of Performing Arts—was suspended just before the semester began. He is not teaching, and his courses are being covered by other faculty members.
Earlier, the Bangbae Police Station in Seoul forwarded Nam’s case to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office last month without arrest on allegations of sexual intercourse by coercion. He is accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman in Seoul last year. The woman reportedly felt threatened, left the scene, and called 112 (South Korea’s emergency number).
Nam denied the allegations during the police investigation. Police, however, said they found the charges credible and forwarded the case to prosecutors. Shortly after the reports surfaced, Nam deactivated his personal social media accounts on the afternoon of the 11th. He told the outlet Dispatch that an investigation is under way but declined to comment on the specifics of the allegations.
The case is now under investigation by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Division 2 for Crimes Against Women and Children.
Meanwhile, the matter has also renewed attention on Nam’s past driving offenses. His license was revoked in 2002 after he exceeded the penalty-point limit for drunk driving and was revoked again in 2003 for the same reason. In 2004, he was booked without detention on charges of driving his mother’s passenger car while unlicensed.
