On the 17th, Judge Woo Young-sik of the 8th Criminal Division at the Daegu District Court’s Western Branch sentenced former Daegu Nam‑gu councilor Jeong Jae‑mok to a fine of 1,000,000 KRW (approximately $750) for abetting a suspect’s escape by handing over the wheel to avoid a DUI checkpoint.
He was indicted in April of last year on charges that he aided A, a woman in her 50s, in driving while intoxicated on a road in Daegu.
Investigators found that Jeong drove part of the route while under the influence and then handed the wheel to A. At the time, his blood-alcohol concentration was below 0.03%—a level that typically warrants only a warning.
Jeong also sought a stay of his expulsion from the council, arguing the dismissal was unjust, but the court denied his request.
