The Climate and Environment Education Center in South Chungcheong Province (Chungnam) opened as a regional hub for environmental education, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045—five years ahead of the national target.

The provincial government held the opening ceremony on the 18th in Jakcheon-ri, Daechi-myeon, Cheongyang County. Governor Kim Tae-heum and roughly 450 residents attended.

The province invested 19.8 billion KRW (approximately $14.85 million) — split evenly between 9.9 billion KRW in national funds and 9.9 billion KRW in provincial funds (approximately $7.43 million each) — to construct the center on a 57,380.5 m² site (approximately 617,638 ft²) with a total floor area of 4,549 m² (about 48,965 ft²). The facility was built to promote a culture of carbon-neutral practices that reduce everyday emissions.

Key facilities include an exhibition and experience center, a multipurpose hall, lodging facilities, and a dining building. The center will offer environmental education programs for all ages—from young children to seniors—to support the goal of carbon neutrality.

The exhibition and experience center incorporates eco-friendly construction methods and renewable energy systems such as solar and geothermal power. Visitors will take part in hands-on programs that demonstrate the carbon emissions associated with lodging, meals, and energy use.

The provincial government expects the center to strengthen regional capacity to respond to the climate crisis.

Governor Kim said, \”This facility demonstrates the vision for a carbon-neutral economic special zone and itself serves as a living textbook for environmental education. Each year, about 20,000 students and residents will experience the severity of the climate crisis and learn practical ways to practice carbon neutrality in their daily lives.\”
