One-on-one matching of evacuees to minimize casualties
Gunpo City announced on March 24 that it is launching a comprehensive plan to protect residents’ lives and property from summer heavy rains and typhoons.
With climate change intensifying disasters, the city will prioritize minimizing casualties and building a rapid-response system. City officials are establishing a direct-reporting structure led by the deputy mayor to ensure quick information sharing and response when disasters occur.
Additionally, the city will strengthen real-time reporting through group chats on social media to boost on-site response capacity. It will keep the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters operating as needed even after weather advisories are lifted, ensuring continuous damage assessment and recovery.
Through March 30, the city will expand the list of areas at risk of casualties and conduct intensive inspections. Officials will include not only previously affected locations but also areas nominated by residents, identifying and addressing hazards in advance.
To protect the most vulnerable, the city will match evacuees one-to-one with resident support teams, creating a support network to enable swift evacuations during disasters.
Mayor Ha Eun-ho said the city will minimize harm through proactive inspections and thorough preparations, and he urged officials to actively promote disaster-response guidance so residents are fully informed.
The summer natural disaster response period runs five months, from May 15 through October 15. The city says it will maintain a robust disaster-response system and keep public safety its top priority.
