South Korea and Japan continued joint search operations for a second day after a foreign crew member fell overboard near Dokdo in the East Sea.
The East Sea Coast Guard said it resumed the search at sunrise on March 28 for a crew member from fishing vessel A who fell overboard about 194 km northeast of Dokdo.
Both countries have focused their efforts on the accident area and expanded the search by bringing in private fishing vessels, the coast guard said.
On the day of the search, participating assets included a 5,000-ton South Korean coast guard ship, the Donghae Fisheries Management Unit’s Mugunghwa 39, and one private fishing vessel. A 1,250-ton vessel from the Japan Coast Guard also joined. Because the accident site lies in the midwaters between South Korea and Japan, both countries are maintaining a real-time information-sharing system as they conduct rescue operations, the coast guard said.
Kim Hwan-gyeong, head of the East Sea Coast Guard, said, “We are concentrating all our efforts on a thorough search centered on units at the scene. South Korea and Japan will closely cooperate to find the missing person.”
