[Herald Economy=Reporter Park Byung-guk] Seoul’s Dongjak District Office, led by Mayor Park Il-ha, said on March 31 that it conducted a joint wildfire response drill with partner agencies.
The exercise, held March 27 around Seodalsan inside the National Cemetery, brought together Dongjak Fire Station, Dongjak Police Station, the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery and civilian organizations including the Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps and the volunteer fire brigade.
Officials treated the cemetery trail as the fire origin and ran the drill in this sequence: ▷ receiving reports ▷ sending emergency disaster alerts and holding a situation-assessment meeting ▷ initial firefighting response ▷ establishing and operating an on-site integrated support center ▷ full fire suppression ▷ after-action review.
Fire engines and wildfire-fighting vehicles were deployed, and crews used backpack pumps, shovels, rakes and other suppression equipment to recreate realistic conditions.
The district established a wildfire prevention headquarters in January and plans to keep emergency duty on weekends and holidays through May 15.
It has built a 24-hour monitoring system using wildfire-surveillance CCTV and an integrated control center, and officials said they will prevent spread by responding quickly and accurately to any fire outbreak.
To that end, authorities organized a 210-person wildfire-fighting force — 36 frontline personnel and 174 support staff — and will coordinate with fire stations, police and the military according to response levels.
Patrols and public outreach have also been stepped up. Officials designated major trails — Seodalsan, Guksabong and Kkachisan — as priority management zones and operate wildfire watch posts. Watch-post staff conduct regular patrols to crack down on illegal use of fire. They will continue hands-on outreach, posting wildfire-prevention banners at trailheads and running campaigns with “Watch out for wildfires” placards and armbands.
Mayor Park Il-ha said, “Prevention is paramount as dry weather raises wildfire risk. We will maintain close cooperation with relevant agencies to strengthen our wildfire response capabilities and do our utmost to protect residents’ lives and property.”
