On April 5, two major downtown underpasses in Busan were closed after ground subsidence, provoking severe traffic congestion on a holiday evening. Following emergency night repairs, authorities began reopening the corridors to vehicles in stages.

According to the city, crews completed emergency work on the Suyeong Riverside Underpass in Haeundae District and restored two-way traffic at 10:50 p.m. that night. By contrast, intensive overnight repairs continued at the Naeseong Underpass in Dongnae District; officials said it would reopen at 7:00 a.m. on April 6 ahead of the Monday morning commute.

Earlier that afternoon, authorities first restricted two-way access to the Naeseong Underpass at about 4:57 p.m. Roughly an hour later, at 5:49 p.m., they imposed the same restriction on the Suyeong Riverside Underpass.

The sudden closures coincided with the evening return of holidaygoers, and drivers seeking detours overloaded alternate routes. The surge produced long queues and gridlock on major roads around the Myeongnyun intersection and other arterial streets near the affected sections.

Busan city and the local governments of Dongnae and Haeundae dispatched emergency alerts urging motorists to use detours. Police and other officials deployed personnel on site to direct traffic and help prevent secondary accidents.

The city said it will launch a detailed investigation into the extent and cause of the subsidence once repairs are complete and traffic has fully resumed.
