Staff at a nursing home are under police investigation on suspicion of abusing a resident in his 90s.
On April 9, Namwon Police in North Jeolla Province said they booked 14 people — including nursing aides, the facility director and the deputy director — on suspicion of violating the Elderly Welfare Act and are investigating them.
Police say the staff allegedly abused or neglected a resident identified as A (in his 90s) at a Namwon nursing home in September of last year.
Investigators say staff changed A’s diaper in a public area through which dozens of people passed. They also moved him back to his room after a bath without properly dressing him.
There are also reports that staff pushed A.
After the victim’s family filed a formal complaint, police opened an investigation. In December, they booked nursing aide B (in his 40s) on suspicion of violating the Elderly Welfare Act and referred the case to prosecutors.
A subsequent investigation by the elder protection agency uncovered additional indications of abuse by other staff. When the family filed further complaints, police expanded their probe.
Police said they have completed questioning 12 of the 14 people booked and plan to question the remaining two.
