With the Yeosu World Expo’s main site set for the Jinmo district on Dolsan Island, attention has focused on why officials passed over the existing expo grounds and what criteria guided the new site selection.
The 2026 Yeosu World Expo Organizing Committee said Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do and other officials visited Yeosu on the 23rd to review preparations and inspect the proposed main site. On location, they exchanged views on event operations and land-use plans.
The committee cited the need for adequate exhibition space and better post-event reuse prospects as reasons for choosing the Jinmo district. It noted the parcel is city-owned, making land acquisition relatively straightforward, and that the island setting supports a design that highlights that symbolism.
By contrast, the committee judged the existing expo grounds to be constrained. Exhibition areas are relatively small, a high proportion of facilities are leased—limiting flexibility—and aging infrastructure would entail additional costs.
The exhibition will comprise eight pavilions, each planned to provide roughly 1,800 m² (about 19,375 sq ft) or more. For those reasons, officials concluded the new site better meets the requirements for scale and layout.
The main venue will be developed in the Jinmo district of Dolsan, while the current expo grounds will operate as a secondary site using existing facilities.
The committee aims to complete venue construction by July, then bolster programming and prepare tourism-linked initiatives. Post-event reuse and ensuring efficient operations, however, will remain significant challenges going forward.
