Namyangju Mayor Joo Gwang-deok visited a series of community sports events and charity drives to assess citizen participation firsthand.
On the 25th and 26th, Namyangju held community sports competitions at local facilities in four disciplines: sport climbing, Go, billiards and bowling. The events were intended to expand access to recreational sports and strengthen local activity.
Mayor Joo toured each venue to encourage participants and review operations. Some 140 people took part in the sport-climbing competition at the Namyangju Sports & Culture Center’s artificial climbing wall, while roughly 60 people competed in Go and omok at Wabu Library. About 330 people participated in the billiards tournament in Jinjeop-eup, and approximately 1,000 competed in the bowling tournament in Hwado-eup, demonstrating steady civic engagement across events.
Mayor Joo emphasized that recreational sports contribute to public health and community building and called for broader participation. The city is exploring ways to steadily expand sports programs and competitions that residents can join as part of daily life.
During the same period, a charity event to support vulnerable residents was held in the Byeollae area. On the 25th, the city hosted a “Love Sharing Bazaar” at the Byeollae Saemaeul Credit Union. About 200 residents attended, purchasing staples such as rice and instant noodles and other food items. Proceeds from sales will be used to support the area’s vulnerable populations.
Mayor Joo visited the bazaar to thank volunteers and check on operations. Residents both purchased goods and donated, reinforcing local acts of sharing.
Namyangju plans to continue pursuing policies that broaden civic participation and strengthen community ties through sports programming and charitable events.
