Kwon Oh-joong became tearful as he spoke about his son.

Kwon appeared as a guest on KBS 1TV’s “Let’s Live with Hwang Shin-hye,” which aired on the 29th.

He said his son once gave up painting because of comparisons but later returned to it. Kwon said his son’s work now sells and he has received invitations for overseas exhibitions; he is active as an artist. Explaining his son’s rare medical condition, Kwon said there is no established disease name. “It is referred to as ‘MICU1,'” he said, “which is the name of a gene or protein. The absence of an official disease name underscores how rare it is. The condition was identified globally in 2014, and I learned about it in 2018. This is the first reported case in our country, and there are only about ten cases worldwide, so developing a treatment will be difficult. Still, about two months ago we were contacted from the United States by people expressing interest in my son’s condition.”

He then revealed that his son had suffered severe school bullying. Kwon recounted that one day his son told him he did not want to go to school because he had been hit. When Kwon confronted the alleged bully, the student denied it and said they had only been playing, so Kwon scolded his son. Later, he received a call saying his son had injured his neck and needed emergency care. They discovered that over the course of a year his son had been tormented by five students. Kwon said they beat him with a stick and forced him to crawl. In one incident, a bully harassing his son near a window caused glass to shatter and fragments became embedded in his son’s neck. The police investigated, but only one student transferred schools and the others were merely reassigned to different classes. Because his son transferred, the incidents did not appear on his school record while the four perpetrators remained, and the ostracism continued.

Kwon said he wants to see his son live an ordinary life, and he became emotional as he expressed that wish.

KBS 1TV’s “Let’s Live with Hwang Shin-hye” airs every Wednesday at 7:40 PM.
