Fifteen 112 emergency calls reporting noise and traffic disruptions were filed during this year’s Labor Day rallies in Busan — about half the number recorded last year.
On May 1, the Busan chapter of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions staged the 136th Labor Day rally across the Busanjin and Yeonje districts. Police estimated roughly 3,000 people attended.
At the scene, police worked with the organizers’ marshals to manage the march route.
The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency said this year’s reports included 14 noise complaints and one traffic complaint, totaling 15 incidents; last year, authorities received 30 such reports.
The organizers deployed 18 of their own marshals. Police said they had informed drivers about detours and temporary bus-route changes in advance using electronic signs and public announcements.
After the rally ended, some participants assisted in cleaning up the area.
A Busan police official said officers focused on minimizing inconvenience to residents through close coordination with organizers.
Still, critics note that recurring disruptions from road closures on major downtown arteries remain a persistent problem for residents.
While this year’s rally concluded relatively peacefully, finding the right balance between allowing downtown demonstrations and limiting traffic disruptions will remain an ongoing policy challenge.
