Is a 10,000-Pyeong Home Truly Freedom? The Controversy Behind the Captured Wolf ‘Neukgu’

The satirical series “Trivial Cartoon” adopts an intentionally understated drawing style to illuminate uncomfortable scenes in society. The artwork may look casual, but the realities it reflects are not.

This installment stems from the controversy over a wolf named Neukgu that escaped from—and was later recaptured at—Daejeon O-World, a South Korean amusement park. People talked as if Neukgu had lived in a “10,000-pyeong” home (roughly 8.17 acres), but you cannot reduce a wild animal’s life to the size of its enclosure.

A space bounded by bars and by the gaze of visitors may appear vast, yet that does not equal freedom. Neukgu’s “10,000-pyeong” enclosure forces us to ask what criteria humans use to judge the life of another species.
