How Naju City is Improving Nighttime Driving Safety with New Streetlights on National Route 1

On May 6, the city said the section serves as a primary exit from National Route 1 into Nampyeong-eup and carries heavy traffic, yet it lacks streetlights, making nighttime visibility difficult for drivers. Because vehicles tend to travel at high speeds on this road, the risk of collisions and run-off-road incidents has been an ongoing concern.

Naju City, together with the Naju Police Station, conducted a comprehensive review of on-site conditions—such as traffic volumes and road geometry—and has repeatedly urged the Gwangju Regional Land Management Office to install lighting. The regional office is currently carrying out a detailed engineering design that reflects those requests.

The final locations and scope of the streetlight installation will be determined by the design study, and construction is planned to begin once the design is complete.

Officials describe the project as a model of field-oriented governance, with local government, law enforcement, and road management agencies collaborating under the shared goal of public safety.

Lee Dong-yul, director of the Safe City Construction Bureau, said, “By installing these streetlights, we will create a safer road environment where residents and visitors alike can feel secure.”
