Public employees across Asan’s municipal institutions have launched a new experiment in cross-agency solidarity, aiming to tear down institutional barriers.
The Asan City Government Employees’ Union, affiliated with the Korea Government Employees’ Union Federation (공노총), announced the launch of the \”Boundary-Free Local Solidarity Strengthening Project.\”
As its first initiative, the union disclosed plans to secure mayoral commendations from Asan City for employees of public institutions.
The project is being promoted under the slogan: \”Erase boundaries! Expand solidarity! Strengthen the public sector!\”
Its goal is to bring together public workers who have long been separated by agency lines, enabling them to speak with a unified voice in the local community and to build a coordinated response framework.
The union intends to recognize employees from a broad range of agencies — including police stations, post offices, district education offices, school administrative offices, fire stations, and the Hyeonchungsa memorial — conveying a clear message: let’s acknowledge the dedication of public workers who serve the same citizens.
The awards are organized to commemorate the restoration of Labor Day after 39 years and serve as a symbolic initiative of local solidarity that crosses occupations and agencies.
The Asan City Government Employees’ Union said it will phase in a series of measures, including △forming a co-prosperity council with the Korea Government Employees’ Union Federation (공노총) △conducting comparative analyses of labor conditions by agency △establishing standard rights and protections for the local public sector △organizing joint cultural and athletic events △and jointly responding to forced election mobilization and incidents of violence within public institutions.
The union says it will use these steps to address disparities in welfare and treatment that vary by agency and to strengthen the bargaining power of the local public workforce.
Lee Eun-sook, the union chair, said, \”Employees at Asan Police Station, Asan Fire Station, the post office and Hyeonchungsa are all colleagues working for the same citizens. Through this first project, we will acknowledge one another’s dedication and build genuine solidarity that elevates the rights and interests of the entire public sector.\”
Local residents are watching closely to see whether the project will move beyond standard union activity and foster a culture of collaboration and a stronger sense of community among public agencies.
