Samsung Electronics and its union failed to reach an agreement during the Central Labor Commission’s second post-mediation session on the 19th and agreed to resume mediation on the 20th. That leaves both sides at the negotiating table through the eve of a planned general strike.
At about 12:55 a.m. on the 20th, Choi Seung-ho said, “We will resume post-mediation at 10 a.m. tomorrow,” adding that the union would remain at the Central Labor Commission to participate in the session.
The Central Labor Commission’s second post-mediation session, which began at 10 a.m. the previous day, lasted roughly 15 hours and concluded at about 12:55 a.m.
The session stretched across the 18th and 19th, spanning nearly 24 hours. Combined with the first post-mediation on the 11th and 12th, which ran about 28 hours, the two sides have now negotiated for roughly 52 hours in total.
Negotiating up to the eve of the union’s announced strike date, the parties have effectively entered a final bargaining phase. The outcome of this session is likely to determine whether the planned general strike proceeds.
