Kakao’s labor union plans to hold a rally around Pangyo Station on June 10 and begin full-scale collective action. The union filed a notification with the Bundang Police Station saying roughly 1,200 members will march around Pangyo Station and U-Space from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. Mediation at the Gyeonggi Provincial Labor Commission ran until 11 p.m. the prior evening but ended without agreement, and the commission suspended mediation. As a result, the Kakao headquarters union, together with four affiliates including Kakao Pay and Kakao Enterprise, secured the legal right to strike. In a statement, the union said it would not completely close the door to dialogue after the suspension of mediation, but added that “we can no longer solve the problem through waiting and patience alone” and that it will actively prepare for a June strike with its members. Kakao CEO Jeong Shin-a apologized to employees for the increased internal uncertainty. Jeong stressed that, although the parties have not yet sufficiently narrowed their differences, they remain a crew who must work together at Kakao and move in the same direction. He also signaled possible organizational changes, saying it is time to establish a stable system and reset service-oriented standards.
