The Korea Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute (Director Kim Min-jong) said on June 2 that, under an Official Development Assistance (ODA) program, it invited 12 instructors from five Kenyan maritime training institutions and successfully completed a course on advanced maritime education systems last May.
This is the second year of the Kenyan maritime education training program following last year. Instructors from Kenya’s leading maritime institutions—Mombasa Technical College, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Bandari Maritime Academy, Pioneer International University, and Mount Kenya University—participated.
Framed around an understanding of International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions, the program offered theory courses reflecting current maritime education and industry trends, including maritime industry digitalization and decarbonization; prospects for maritime education in Korea and globally; eco-friendly engine technologies; advanced safety training; and shipping industry developments.
During the training period, participants toured the institute’s training ship, the Korea Maritime and Ocean University center, Busan New Port, Techcross, Hyundai Motor Company, the Autonomous Ship Demonstration Center, and other major shipbuilding and shipping firms.
Kim Min-jong, director of the Korea Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute, said, “This training offered a meaningful opportunity to directly share Korea’s advanced maritime education system and industry practices with Kenya. It will help strengthen the instructional capacity of Kenyan maritime institutions and build a foundation for training internationally qualified maritime professionals.”
