Yonhap News reported that on the 18th (local time), at a White House executive-order signing, Trump said, “They wanted to close the strait again. They’ve been doing this for a long time, but they can’t intimidate us.”

He said Iran had been acting a bit craftier—as it has for 47 years—and repeatedly asserted that Iran’s navy and air force “are gone” and that the leadership has been removed, amounting to a regime change.

Trump added that talks with Iran are “going pretty well” and “actually proceeding smoothly,” saying, “We’ll watch how things unfold, but we will receive some information today.”

Observers interpreted Trump’s reference to “some information” as suggesting the negotiations could yield a significant breakthrough later that day.

Trump cited the many U.S. service members killed in Iranian bomb attacks and said, “We have a completely different perspective than other presidents. They have carried out killings for 47 years and escaped punishment, but they won’t be able to do that anymore.”
