[Herald Economy reporter Yoo Dong-hyun] Democratic Party lawmakers Seo Young-kyo and Park Jung, who had been weighing bids for the party’s floor leader post, announced on the 26th — one day before the candidate registration deadline — that they would not run.
Within the party, speculation has grown that their withdrawals clear the way to consolidate support behind former floor leader Han Byung-do for another term.
Seo wrote on Facebook that she had seriously considered running for floor leader but would instead focus on her responsibilities as chair of the Special Committee investigating allegations of politically motivated prosecutions under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration and on her role as chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. She said she would devote her full effort to those duties.
Seo currently leads that Special Committee and chairs the Legislation and Judiciary Committee.
After Seo announced she would not run, Park posted on Facebook saying that, after careful deliberation, he too had decided not to enter the race.
Park said he had pledged in the previous contest to act as a “relief pitcher” for victory and praised Han Byung-do for stabilizing the situation. “The mound is steady, and the lineup is hitting well,” he said. “For the Democratic Party’s victory and for democracy, I will now serve quietly.”
With Seo followed by Park stepping aside, Baek Hye-ryun — who ran in the previous floor leader contest — is likely to think twice before entering this race.
The withdrawals by senior candidates have strengthened calls within the party to endorse former floor leader Han Byung-do, who has signaled his intention to seek another term.
Han wrote on Facebook that he would continue to work competently and asked for trust. “I am confident I can do the job. Please believe in me,” he wrote.
The Democratic Party’s floor leader election is scheduled for the 6th of next month.
