A dramatic rivalry match unfolded at Suwon Sports Complex on May 3. The home side, Suwon FC, coached by Park Geon-ha, defeated Suwon Samsung, led by Lee Jung-hyo, 3-1 in Round 10 of the 2026 Hana Bank K League 2. In front of 9,312 fans, Suwon FC asserted itself as the city’s dominant team.
The win snapped Suwon FC’s four-game winless run and, more importantly, marked a big rebound against their most dreaded rival. The victory lifted Suwon FC to fourth place with a record of 5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses, totaling 17 points.
For Suwon Samsung, the defeat—only their second of the season—halted a growing run and left them in second place, three points behind leaders Busan I’Park (25 points).
Early on, the match appeared to favor Suwon Samsung. In the 18th minute, a rehearsed set piece paid off. From a corner, Ko Seung-beom timed a right-footed volley perfectly, beating the defense and curling into the corner of the net.

Buoyed by that goal, Suwon Samsung created another clear chance in the 25th minute. Kang Hyun-muk slid onto a smart pass from Ilyuchenko and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to be denied by Jeong Min-gi’s fingertip save.
Just before halftime, a pivotal moment nearly swung the match. Suwon FC looked to have conceded a penalty in a defensive scramble, but the on-field VAR review overturned the call.
That reversal proved to be the turning point. It gave Suwon FC a lifeline and left Suwon Samsung rueing a golden opportunity.
The momentum flipped immediately after the break. Suwon FC pushed higher and pressed with purpose, and the reward was quick. In the 4th minute of the second half, Prizo threaded a pass through the defense to Ha Jung-woo, who calmly rounded the keeper and finished to level the score.

That goal swung the match in Suwon FC’s favor. As their attack clicked, Suwon Samsung’s back line visibly began to falter.
The turnaround came quickly. In the 24th minute of the second half, Lee Si-young burst down the right and cut the ball back to Choi Ki-yun, who didn’t hesitate. His left-foot strike curled up, struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line for a dramatic go-ahead goal.
Suwon Samsung reacted with substitutions to chase an equalizer, but Suwon FC’s organized defense held steady.
Ha Jung-woo put the finishing touch on the night. In the 39th minute of the second half, he intercepted a pass near midfield and raced forward, shrugging off defenders to face the keeper one-on-one before calmly slotting home to complete his brace. He took off his shirt and soaked in the fans’ celebration.
The closing minutes showcased Suwon FC’s focus. They withstood eight minutes of stoppage-time pressure from Suwon Samsung and kept a clean sheet. When the final whistle blew, Suwon FC had sealed a 3-1 derby victory.
