Jo Mun-gwan, the Democratic Party’s candidate for mayor of Yangsan, drew attention on May 8 after securing a commitment to establish a Korea Elevator University campus in Ungsang. To move the project forward, Jo met with the university president and took initial steps to finalize details such as campus size and an opening timeline.

At his campaign office that day, Jo met with Lee Hyun-seok, president of Korea Elevator University. They agreed to recruit roughly 100 first-year students across three programs beginning next year, including a park-golf instructor training program. They plan to begin scouting temporary sites and buildings for the school in July.

Lee said Ungsang — located on the outskirts of major cities — is well positioned to serve as a regional hub and offers strategic advantages for training and placing specialists in the elevator industry.

Jo said that if elected he will lead discussions with the national government and relevant agencies to expand the Ungsang site into Korea Elevator University’s second campus.

Lee added, “Geochang County’s inland location limited our ability to attract students from the Busan–Ulsan–Gyeongnam region. We expect the Ungsang campus will ease student recruitment and improve university‑industry cooperation with nearby companies.”

Korea Elevator University is the world’s only specialized university dedicated to training elevator professionals. Most of its graduates go on to work for major domestic conglomerates and international firms.
