On May 9, Kim Won-ki, the Democratic Party of Korea’s candidate for mayor of Uijeongbu, held the opening ceremony for his campaign office and formally launched his mayoral campaign.

Former National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang, lawmakers Park Ji-hye and Lee Jae-gang, and numerous other prominent figures and citizens attended the event to show their support for Kim’s campaign launch.

The venue filled with residents and supporters well before the program began. Attendees chanted slogans such as “Change for Uijeongbu,” “Citizen-centered governance,” and “Uijeongbu’s development alongside the Lee Jae-myung administration,” signaling high expectations.

In his speech, Kim said, “Today is not the start of Kim Won-ki as an individual; it is a moment to bring together citizens’ will and aspirations for a new future for Uijeongbu.” He pledged, “I will listen humbly to the people and be a mayor who seeks answers together with citizens in their daily lives.”

He added, “Uijeongbu now faces a range of challenges: pressures on livelihoods, a stagnant local economy, stalled development of returned military land, and delayed transportation innovation. Through strong cooperation and communication with the Lee Jae-myung administration, we will deliver on developing returned sites and on transport innovation.”

Kim argued that politics should not rule over citizens but must breathe with them and take responsibility to the end. “Based on President Lee Jae-myung’s philosophy that ushered in an era of citizen sovereignty, I will implement citizen-sovereignty governance in Uijeongbu,” he said.

Moon Hee-sang, who attended the event, lent his support with a calligraphic message invoking victory and said, “Uijeongbu needs a prepared candidate to take responsibility for its future.” Lawmakers Park Ji-hye and Lee Jae-gang also pledged to join forces for Uijeongbu’s development and the administration’s success, wishing Kim victory.

Attendees described Kim as the right person to lead Uijeongbu’s change, a candidate who understands the local scene, and a mayor who communicates—expressing strong confidence in his candidacy.

In closing, Kim vowed, “I will fulfill the promise of a stronger Uijeongbu that grows with the Lee Jae-myung administration and of being a mayor with real authority.” He pledged to remain true to his original resolve, keep his focus on citizens, and continue leading from the front.
