President Lee Jae-myung spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump on the night of May 17, two days after the U.S.-China summit concluded. They discussed the summit’s outcome, prospects for peace on the Korean Peninsula, and ways to implement the Korea–U.S. Joint Factsheet (JFS). Because President Trump called Japan and then South Korea immediately after his visit to China, the exchanges are seen as efforts to align views on post-summit developments in Northeast Asia and on U.S.-ROK coordination.

Senior Blue House spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung said the president spoke with President Trump for about 30 minutes starting around 10 p.m., and that the call was made at South Korea’s request. The direct leader-to-leader contact was the first since their meeting at last October’s APEC summit in Gyeongju, roughly seven months earlier.

According to the Blue House, the two leaders exchanged assessments of the U.S.-China summit. After completing his visit to China, President Trump contacted Japan and then spoke directly with South Korea. Given that shifts in U.S.-China relations could affect Northeast Asian security, supply chains and economic security, the leaders shared the summit’s results and discussed likely follow-on developments.

Peace on the Korean Peninsula was also a primary agenda item. Observers note that changes in U.S.-China ties could influence North Korea policy, messaging to Pyongyang, and mechanisms for managing tensions on the peninsula. Confirming a common understanding between Seoul and Washington therefore carries significance for future DPRK policy coordination and regional security management.

The call also addressed implementation of existing U.S.-ROK agreements. In particular, the leaders exchanged views on the need to ensure the smooth implementation of the Joint Factsheet issued after their summit at last year’s APEC meeting in Gyeongju.

The Joint Factsheet is a post-summit document that covers key bilateral issues— including tariffs, economic security, investment and defense-industry cooperation. As a practical benchmark for cooperation, monitoring its implementation remains a core bilateral management task.

Earlier, on May 15, President Trump spoke for about 15 minutes with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to share the outcome of the U.S.-China summit.

Prime Minister Takaichi said after the call that President Trump provided a detailed account of his visit to China and the summit. She added that they exchanged views on economic-security and other security concerns related to China, discussed the situation in Iran, and reaffirmed the steadfast U.S.-Japan alliance.
