[MyDaily = Reporter Kim Geon-ho] Will Manchester United land Mateus Fernandes (West Ham United)?

Manchester United are closing out the season on a high. Since appointing Michael Carrick as interim manager in January, United have gone 11 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses in 16 matches, finishing third in the Premier League and sealing a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

United will wrap up the campaign on May 25 (KST) at the American Express Stadium in Falmer, England, when they face Brighton & Hove Albion in the final round of the Premier League.

The club is already planning for next season. Carrick is the strong favorite to be promoted to permanent manager and is expected to sign a two-year contract that includes a one-year extension option.

With Carrick potentially in charge, United are likely to recruit players who suit his system — starting with reinforcements in central midfield to help fill the void left by Casemiro.

Several midfielders have been linked to United, and Fernandes is one of the names being discussed. He moved from Southampton to West Ham last August and has made 37 appearances this season, establishing himself as a regular in West Ham’s midfield.

West Ham sit 18th with a record of 9 wins, 9 draws and 19 losses for 36 points. With two games left, 17th-place Tottenham Hotspur sit on 38 points; if Spurs pick up just one point from their remaining fixtures, West Ham’s relegation will be all but confirmed.

Should West Ham go down, several key players could seek exits — and Fernandes could be among them.

GiveMeSport, citing TeamTalk on the 19th, reported that Fernandes is \”very eager\” to join United and link up with his fellow Portuguese teammate Bruno Fernandes. The outlet added that United \”extremely want\” to sign him and currently lead the chase, but Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Chelsea could also be in the running.

The report argued United should do everything possible to secure Fernandes this summer.

GiveMeSport wrote, \”TeamTalk values him at around £80 million (roughly 162 billion KRW; about $121.5 million). United will hope to negotiate a lower fee if West Ham are relegated to the Championship — a scenario that currently looks likely.\”

It added, \”Whatever happens, United should exhaust every option to sign Fernandes this summer. At just 21, he has been one of the standout performers across the past two seasons for both Southampton and West Ham, displaying a maturity beyond his years.\”
