[Sports Today reporter Lee Sang-pil] Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers) dominated both on the mound and at the plate to lead the Dodgers to a 4-0 road win. Hye-seong Kim contributed a hit.

The Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres, 4-0, at Petco Park in San Diego, California, on May 21 (KST) in the 2026 Major League Baseball season.

Los Angeles improved to 31-19 and remained atop the National League West. San Diego fell to 29-20 and sits second in the division.

Ohtani was the clear difference. After often sitting out his plate appearances on pitching days while his bat cooled, he delivered in both roles Saturday.

Starting as the pitcher and batting leadoff, Ohtani worked five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. At the plate he went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, an RBI, two runs scored and a walk.

This season, Ohtani has made eight starts on the mound, throwing 49 innings with a 4-2 record, a 0.73 ERA and 54 strikeouts. As a hitter he is batting .272 (47-for-173) with eight home runs, 26 RBIs, 33 runs scored, six stolen bases and an .885 OPS.

Hye-seong Kim started at second base and batted ninth, going 1-for-4 to snap a two-game hitless stretch. He is now hitting .269 (28-for-103) with one homer, 10 RBIs, 13 runs and five steals, posting a .682 OPS.

The Dodgers struck first when Ohtani led off the game with a solo home run off San Diego starter Randy Vasquez. In the second inning, Max Muncy doubled and Will Smith followed with a single to create a no-out, first-and-third situation, and Teoscar Hernandez’s sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

Ohtani continued to shut down the Padres’ lineup and preserve the lead. In the fifth, after walks to Ohtani and Mookie Betts produced a one-out, first-and-third, Kyle Tucker delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ohtani briefly ran into trouble with one out and the bases loaded, but he induced Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit into a double play to escape the jam. From the sixth inning the Dodgers turned the game over to their bullpen to lock it down.

Los Angeles maintained control and in the ninth Hernandez added a solo homer to seal a 4-0 victory.
