[SPOTV News = Reporter Jo Yong-un] Tottenham Hotspur is embroiled in a relegation fight, and an unexpected move by captain Cristian Romero, 28, has ignited a firestorm of criticism.

Argentine outlet Perfil reports Romero is currently in Córdoba. He flew back to his homeland even though Tottenham’s season is not yet over.

The reason surprised many: Romero traveled to support his former club Belgrano in a cup final. After Belgrano clinched a spot in the Apertura tournament final, Romero told fans on social media he would “be there,” and he followed through by booking a flight to Argentina.

Belgrano president Luis Fabián Artime said Romero sent a congratulatory message and confirmed the captain plans to attend the final against River Plate at Estadio Kempes on the 24th.

Back home, Romero has been busy with goodwill gestures. Cadena 3 reported he drew attention for a touching moment with a young fan: at Belgrano’s training ground, he spoke with 7-year-old Valentino Luis, presented him with a signed jersey and offered birthday wishes.

Local fans hailed him as a “true hero,” but Tottenham supporters reacted coldly. The club’s situation is far from comfortable: with one league match remaining, Tottenham sits 17th on 38 points — just two points clear of the relegation zone and 18th-place West Ham United. Even a draw in the final game, which would be enough to secure survival, does not remove the threat of relegation entirely.

Given Tottenham’s precarious position, Romero’s place should arguably be in North London. Even had he stayed, he wouldn’t be available to play — an injury ruled him out long ago. Still, as captain and a representative of the squad, Romero’s decision to spend the club’s most critical moment oceans away, celebrating with his boyhood team instead of alongside his teammates, has left many supporters feeling let down.
