Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, is scheduled to marry this weekend, but the president suggested he may skip the ceremony amid the war with Iran and ongoing negotiations.
On the 21st (local time), outlets including The Hill reported that the president told reporters in the Oval Office, “My son wants me to be there,” and said he would try to attend because the event would be very small and private.
He added, however, “Now is not a good time for me,” citing the Iran situation and other matters and indicating he might not go.
The president also expressed frustration with media coverage about whether he would attend a wedding amid a war.
“I can’t win, no matter what choice I make,” he said. “If I go, I’ll be criticized; if I don’t go, I’ll be criticized. Of course it’s because of fake news.” He added, “I hope the two have a happy marriage.”
Trump Jr. plans to hold a second wedding this weekend in the Bahamas with Bettina Anderson. Anderson, a U.S. socialite, became engaged to Trump Jr. late last year.
Meanwhile, the president is focusing on negotiations to end the war with Iran. The prolonged conflict has eroded public support at home, and rising prices ahead of the November midterms have added pressure on his approval ratings, according to sources.
