(The CEN News / Reporter Jeongmi Ban) | Gwangju Jeil High right-hander Park Chan-min has officially embarked on a bid to reach Major League Baseball in the United States.
The Phillies announced on May 24 (Korean time) that they had signed Korean prospect Park Chan-min to an international amateur contract.
Born in 2008, Park is an imposing right-hander at 191 cm (about 6 ft 3 in) and 94 kg (about 207 lb). He can touch the 150 km/h range (roughly 93–94 mph) and pairs his fastball with a slider, curveball and splitter.
This season at the high-school level, he made 12 appearances, went 6–0 and posted a 1.37 ERA.
Park struck out 65 batters in 46 innings and posted a 0.65 WHIP, helping Gwangju Jeil High reach the semifinals of both the Emart Cup and the Golden Lion Flag tournaments.
Local outlet Philadelphia Insider reported Park’s signing bonus was about 1.83 billion KRW (approximately $1,372,500).
That is the second-largest international amateur bonus the Phillies have handed out this year, trailing only Venezuelan outfielder Francisco Renteria.
The Phillies reportedly traded two minor-league players last month to free up additional international signing pool funds to land Park.
Major League clubs face limits on how much they can spend on international amateur signings.
Park is the first player from this year’s expected high-school graduating class to sign with a U.S. professional club.
