Trump’s Ultimatum to Iran: A ‘Great Agreement’ or No Deal at All?

Translation result도널드 [Herald Economy = Reporter Kim Yong-jae] U.S. President Donald Trump said on May 25 (local time) that talks to end hostilities with Iran will either produce a “great and meaningful agreement” or end in “no deal.”

In a post on his social platform Truth Social, Trump said any agreement with Iran would be the opposite of the “JCPOA disaster” negotiated by the “failed” Obama administration. The JCPOA refers to the 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and Western powers — the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Trump insisted the JCPOA “became a direct and open path to nuclear weapons for Iran,” and added, “I will not make such a deal.”

His remarks come amid growing signs that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to halt hostilities between the U.S. and Iran could be imminent. Foreign reports indicate the draft MOU would extend a 60-day ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz during that period, and continue negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

However, Washington and Tehran disagree over how much progress has been made, particularly on nuclear issues such as Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium — a persistent sticking point.

Trump also lashed out at Democrats and some Republicans who have criticized the talks he is leading, saying they “talk about matters that aren’t even being negotiated yet while knowing nothing about the potential deal with Iran.”

He added, “These people should go home and rest. They only create division and defeat. In short, they are losers.”
