Giants Star Lee Jung-hoo Set for Surprising Early Return From Injury

Lee Jung-hoo, 27, of the San Francisco Giants appears likely to return to the lineup sooner than expected after leaving a game with lower-back discomfort. With a possible comeback as early as this weekend, attention is on whether he can help sustain the team’s recent upswing.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported on May 27 (Korea time) that Lee has resumed on-field workouts. If that timeline holds, he could return in the Giants’ May 30 road game against the Colorado Rockies.

Giants manager Tony Vaitello said before the home game at Oracle Park against the Arizona Diamondbacks, “I expect Lee Jung-hoo could be ready to return this weekend.”

Lee’s absence interrupted a hot stretch. On May 19 in Arizona, he went 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to five games, but he felt discomfort in a lower-back muscle while fielding in the bottom of the fourth and was removed. He then missed the next two games against Arizona.

On May 23, the club placed Lee on the 10-day injured list to manage his recovery.

After struggling through an early-season slump, Lee has steadily regained his form since late last month. Once dipping into the .100s, he has pushed his season average up to 0.268 (48-for-179).
