Detroit turns to Somers instead of Go Woo-seok after closer Kenley Jansen lands on IL
Go remains off the 40-man roster, making a call-up complicated; he could opt out to pursue a new team
Go Woo-seok’s bid for a major-league call-up fell through again, despite a string of dominant outings at Triple-A.
On May 29 (Korean time), ahead of Detroit’s 2026 home game against the Los Angeles Angels at Comerica Park, the Tigers placed closer Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation.
Jansen’s absence had many expecting Detroit to summon Go, who has been outstanding for Triple-A Toledo, but the club instead promoted left-hander Drew Somers.
Somers has appeared in 17 Triple-A games this season, posting a 1–0 record with three holds, one save and a 3.00 ERA (21 IP, 7 ER).
By contrast, Go has worked in 16 minor-league games this year, going 2–1 with a 1.38 ERA. He had recorded seven straight scoreless outings through May 28, making him the clear candidate based on recent form.
The hold-up on Go’s promotion appears driven more by roster logistics than performance.
Somers, unlike Go, is already on the Tigers’ 40-man roster. Players on the 40-man can be added to the 26-man active roster at any time; Go remains off that list.
To promote Go, Detroit would first need to add him to the 40-man roster, which would require designating another player to create the opening.
The most practical option would be transferring a player currently on the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL to free a 40-man slot. The key question is how aggressively the Tigers will pursue that move for Go.
Having already declined a return to his former KBO club, the LG Twins, Go could consider leaving Detroit if he doesn’t receive a genuine opportunity in the majors.
Per the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract, he can void the deal after June 1 and pursue free agency.
Given his strong Triple-A performance, he would likely draw interest from clubs in need of bullpen reinforcements if he reaches free agency.
