Why Detroit Tigers Passed Over Go Woo-seok Despite His Dominant Performance

[Alpha Economy = Byungseong Park] With calls growing for the Detroit Tigers to bolster their bullpen, Triple-A reliever Go Woo-seok was again passed over for a major-league promotion.

The Tigers placed closer Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with pelvic inflammation, creating a gap in the bullpen, but the club summoned left-hander Drew Somers instead of Go.

The primary reason Detroit didn’t call up Go was the 40-man roster rule. Somers is already on the 40-man roster, allowing an immediate addition. Promoting Go, who is off the roster, would require a roster move such as designating a player for assignment or shifting someone to the 60-day injured list.

Detroit has been cautious in its roster management and appears reluctant to clear a spot for Go.

Go’s next move likely hinges on an opt-out clause he can exercise after June 1. If the Tigers can’t offer a clear path to the majors, Go could pursue free agency and seek opportunities elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Go appeared for the Columbus Clippers at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio, on the 29th (local time), snapping a streak of seven consecutive scoreless outings.

He struck out four batters across the fourth and fifth innings and looked sharp, but in the sixth he failed to record an out, allowing two doubles and a walk before being lifted. The reliever who followed allowed both inherited runners to score, increasing Go’s earned runs to three and pushing his season ERA to 3.77.
