The explosion at Hanwha Aerospace’s Daejeon plant has prompted Incheon candidates in the local elections to lower the tone of their final campaigns. Many are expected to limit the use of campaign vehicles and suspend choreographed routines.

Local political sources said on June 1 that the Hanwha Aerospace blast led both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party to instruct their nationwide candidates to scale back campaign activity.

The Democratic Party told all candidate campaigns to “suspend all campaign events until further notice given the gravity of the situation.” It also directed teams to cease operating campaign vehicles and to emphasize individual outreach and phone canvassing instead.

The People Power Party responded immediately as well. Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk issued an urgent order for campaign offices nationwide to refrain from using campaign jingles and choreographed routines.

As a result, Incheon mayoral candidates—Democratic Party nominee Park Chan-dae and People Power Party nominee Yoo Jeong-bok—are expected to minimize jingles and routines during their final concentrated rallies. Each campaign has informed staff of the guidance and is adjusting rally formats accordingly.

A campaign official for Park said they have instructed staff to avoid using loudspeakers, megaphones and choreographed routines from campaign vehicles, and that the campaign is reviewing final-day formats and schedules.

A spokesperson for Yoo’s campaign said the team will follow the central party’s guidance to avoid routines and megaphones and conduct final campaigning in a subdued manner, adding that specific plans are still under discussion.

Earlier that day, an explosion at Hanwha Aerospace’s Daejeon plant killed six people and injured one.
