Mexico — a co-host of the World Cup in North and Central America and South Korea’s Group A opponent in the second match — has finalized its 26-man roster. The Mexican Football Federation posted the squad on its official site on the 1st (Korean time). The headline name is veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who will appear at his sixth World Cup. Ochoa first made the final roster at the 2006 World Cup in Germany but didn’t see any game action there — the same was true in 2010 in South Africa. In Brazil in 2014, however, starter Jesús Corona struggled, and Ochoa stepped in, producing a string of memorable saves and establishing himself as Mexico’s long-term number one. With this selection, Ochoa joins the ranks of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as players set to appear in six World Cups.

Up front, veteran striker Raúl Jiménez, now at Fulham in the English Premier League, and AC Milan forward Santiago Giménez made the cut. One of the more intriguing picks is 17-year-old midfielder Hilberto Mora (Tijuana), born in 2008; he’s already earned nine senior caps since his call-up last year and is being viewed as a rising talent. Naturalized players also make up part of the roster, including Álvaro Fidalgo (Real Betis) and Colombian-born forward Julián Quiñones (Al Qadisiyah). Coach Aguirre filled 12 of the 26 spots with players based in Mexico’s domestic league. With the roster set, Mexico will play a final World Cup tune-up against Serbia on the 5th in Toluca. Mexico’s Group A match against South Korea — the second game of the group stage for both teams — is scheduled for the 19th at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara. #CONCACAFWorldCup #Mexico #FinalSquad #HongMyungBo #Ochoa Yonhap News TV — For tips and inquiries: KakaoTalk/Line jebo23, Woo Joon-seong (Spaceship@yna.co.kr)
