Can Lee Jung-hoo Save the Giants? The Star’s 10-Game Streak vs. Team Slump

Daniel Kim Views

Lee

[MyDaily = Shim Jae-hee] Lee Jung-hoo, nicknamed the “Grandson of the Wind,” returned from injury and has been swinging a hot bat. Still, the San Francisco Giants keep sliding — they’ve fallen to last place in the National League West.

The Giants fell 3-8 on June 3 (KST) at American Family Field in Milwaukee. After a 2-16 loss the day before, Milwaukee handed San Francisco back-to-back defeats. The team had snapped a five-game skid with a win but then dropped two straight.

Milwaukee took control early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. San Francisco got one back in the top of the sixth but allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh to fall behind 4-1. In the top of the eighth, Lee delivered an RBI single and the Giants added another run to cut the deficit to 4-3. Milwaukee answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, handing San Francisco an 8-3 loss.

The Giants are 1-7 over their last eight games. They briefly escaped a five-game losing streak with a win but have slipped back into a slump. Other than the 19-6 rout of the Colorado Rockies on June 1 — when Lee had five hits — both the pitching and offense have struggled, and the team hasn’t shaken the losing mood.

Milwaukee

The loss dropped San Francisco to 23-38 (.377), plunging them to the bottom of the NL West. Colorado, which won two straight to reach 24-38 (.387), jumped ahead in the standings; the Giants sit half a game back. Even with Lee hitting since his return, the roster has been inconsistent and the club continues to struggle.

Lee wasn’t in the starting lineup; he entered as a pinch-hitter in the top of the eighth. With two outs and runners on first and second, he lined an RBI single off Abner Uribe. The hit extended his hitting streak to 10 games and raised his season average to .307 (61-for-199).

Milwaukee blanked San Francisco in consecutive home games to push its winning streak to three, improving to 37-21 (.638). The Brewers lead the NL Central, 5.5 games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh (33-28, .541).
