Samcheok, in Gangwon Province, announced on the 16th that it will launch a major extension of the Chogok Yonggul Chotdaebawi coastal trail — one of the city’s flagship seaside attractions.

The project will add a pedestrian bridge to bypass the trail’s end section, which had been closed due to rockfall risks, improving visitor safety and convenience.

To make the coastline easier and safer to enjoy, Samcheok will build an 80-meter (about 262 ft) suspension footbridge and a 48-meter (about 157 ft) deck bridge, and it will renovate the terminal plaza.

The project’s total cost is 8.5 billion KRW (about $6,375,000). The city completed foundation work for the suspension bridge abutments last year and is moving quickly to meet a year-end completion target.

When complete, the extension will provide a safe walking route that fully bypasses the rockfall-prone section. With a suspension bridge stretching over the water and a deck path tracing the cliffs, the trail could become a new must-see spot for experiencing the East Coast up close.

Officials expect the extension to lengthen visitors’ stays, attract more tourists and boost local businesses — creating positive ripple effects across the regional economy.

A city official said, “By expanding coastal walking infrastructure, we’ll improve visitor safety and better utilize our marine scenic resources to further elevate the Chogok Chotdaebawi Trail into a nationally recognized tourist destination.”
