Malaysia’s Department of Statistics reported on the 17th that domestic travel reached 74 million person-trips in Q4 2025 (Oct–Dec), a 10.8% increase year over year. That’s also a 2.0% rise from the previous quarter.
Spending by domestic travelers in Oct–Dec 2025 climbed 12.4% year over year to 32.6 billion ringgit (about 1.324 trillion JPY, approximately 8.87 billion USD). Spending was up 9.1% compared with the prior quarter.
By star rating, occupancy rates for hotels and other accommodations in Oct–Dec 2025 were: 3-star properties at 70.0% (up 0.3 percentage points year over year); 5-star at 69.0% (up 0.1 point); 4-star at 62.8% (up 0.4 point); and 2-star and below at 62.4% (a notable 9.2-point increase).
By location, hilly and mountainous areas showed the highest occupancy at 89.0% (up 0.2 point year over year). Urban areas recorded 64.3% (up 2.8 points), while beach areas logged 61.1% (up 1.6 points).
Domestic air passenger numbers rose 17.9% year over year, though they dipped 1.4% from the previous quarter.
