Rail fares reimbursed up to 100% — stay longer, spend local: Goheung boosts community spending with Goheung Love vouchers. Pivoting to stay-and-spend tourism centered on lodging and local consumption; expected to benefit small businesses and the local economy

Goheung County in South Jeolla Province is launching Space Railway 999, a stay-focused tourism package that pairs train travel with local spending to lure visitors and spark the local economy. In partnership with Korea Railroad Corporation, the county is running special promotions in April and May that reimburse rail fares up to 100% and offer a lineup of perks to encourage travelers to spend time and money in Goheung.
Space Railway 999 links rail-tour packages with direct incentives like travel reimbursements and local vouchers. Visitors who stay at least one night in Goheung and dine at local restaurants can receive a mobile Goheung Love voucher (Chak) worth up to 100,000 KRW (approximately $75) per person. After visiting designated attractions and completing QR verification, travelers can also claim rail-fare refunds, reducing their transportation costs.
Officials say the initiative represents a meaningful shift toward stay-and-spend tourism that drives both lodging and local consumption. Because the vouchers are redeemable only at neighborhood businesses, they’re expected to directly boost revenue for restaurants, accommodations, cafés and tourist facilities, helping to revive Goheung’s local economy.
A tourism policy official said, “Space Railway 999 combines the accessibility of rail travel with Goheung’s tourism assets as a stay-focused product. We expect visitors to stay longer, spend locally and build connections with the community — outcomes that should revitalize the local economy and expand the living population.”
Space Railway 999 is part of Goheung’s broader strategy to attract visitors and stimulate the local economy. By reimbursing rail fares and issuing local vouchers, the county aims to encourage longer stays and stronger local spending, which should benefit neighborhood businesses and the wider economy. Stay-focused tourism products like this not only deliver immediate economic gains but also help create lasting, sustainable ties between travelers and the communities they visit.
