Goesan, in North Chungcheong Province, is synonymous with clear water and stunning mountains. One of its crown jewels is the Sanmak-i Old Trail, a scenic trek that hugs the edge of Goesan Lake and draws hikers year-round. At the trail’s end, the Yeonhayeop Cloud Bridge is more than a crossing—it’s the landmark moment of any Goesan visit.

The views are as impressive as the bridge’s architecture. Cross it once and you’ll instantly get why it’s so beloved.

Completed in August 2016 at a cost of about 2.85 billion KRW (about $1,881,000 USD), the Yeonhayeop Cloud Bridge stretches 134 m (about 440 ft) and is 2.1 m (about 6.9 ft) wide. It was built as the centerpiece of Goesan County’s Gunjasan Seonbi-gil development project.

You don’t have to squint to see why it’s often called a masterpiece. The bridge’s elegant design complements the jagged rocks and lake without intruding. Parts of the deck are steel grating, so you can peer straight down at the blue-green water—a pulse-quickening thrill.

It’s solidly engineered for safety, but still keeps that satisfying sway that makes suspension bridges fun to walk across.

The bridge’s biggest contribution is reconnecting the Sanmak-i Old Trail with the Chungcheong Yangban Trail—routes that were severed when the Goesan Dam was built. Thanks to the bridge, hikers can now cross the lake and combine both trails into a single loop.

The result is a circular trek that lets you soak up the humble beauty of the Sanmak-i Old Trail and the calm, scholarly vibe of the Chungcheong Yangban Trail in one day.

The bridge’s name comes from the submerged Yeonhagu Valley—known for its mist and sunsets—so it also serves as a symbolic bridge between the area’s past and its present tourism appeal.

The Scent of Mountain Cherry Blossoms Scattered Over the Blue Lake

Spring is another great time to visit the Yeonhayeop Cloud Bridge, thanks to the mountain cherry blossoms that line the lake. These blooms feel different from city cherry lanes—less staged, more painterly. Against the deep-blue lake and fresh green shoots on the ridge, the pale pink petals look like watercolor dabs on a canvas.

Stand on the bridge, feel the cool breeze, and watch the speckles of pink along the ridgeline. It’s not flashy, but Goesan’s gentle spring charm can feel downright cleansing.

To make the most of your visit, drive from Goesan town along the Goegang Cherry Blossom Road on the way to the bridge. Passing under that tunnel of blooms sets the mood perfectly.

You can park and hike in, but I prefer taking the sightseeing boat from the Sanmak-i Old Trail entrance to Gallon Naru. From the lake you get a full view of the cloud bridge; then step off, cross it, and start your trek—smart on energy, generous on scenery.

Believe it or not, access to this amazing viewpoint is completely free.
