South Jeolla Province has picked four older tourist spots for experience-driven makeovers designed to boost their appeal.

On the 29th, officials named Gangjin, Jangseong, Wando, and Gurye as the sites for the 2026 Revitalization Project for Aging Tourist Sites. The goal is not just to refresh facilities but to add attractions that encourage visitors to stay longer and engage more deeply.

Regionally, Gangjin will turn unused facilities into after-dark landscape experience spaces. Jangseong plans to rework a site into a media-focused memorial hall. Wando will introduce media art installations, and Gurye will create a children’s hands-on attraction that highlights local specialties.

Selection criteria went beyond simple upgrades. Officials prioritized projects with strong content, realistic feasibility, and clear ties to local identity—the central question being whether each site can offer visitors a genuinely new experience.

The province says it will enlist experts to refine the plans and develop each location into an immersive, locally rooted attraction.

Since 2018, the program has supported 21 projects with a total investment of 35.1 billion KRW (approximately $26,325,000).

“Tourist sites can’t secure competitiveness through basic facility upgrades alone,” said Choi Young-ju, director of the province’s Tourism and Sports Bureau. “By blending local stories with hands-on experiences, we’ll reimagine these places as magnetic destinations that delight both residents and visitors.”
