Wando’s Cheonghae Port Film Set Rebirth: 5 Key Upgrades to Boost Tourism and Attract Film Productions

[iNews24 reporter Han Seung-yeop] Wando County in South Jeolla Province is rolling out a bold makeover for the Cheonghae Port filming set — a place steeped in the legacy of maritime master Jang Bogo — transforming it into a sleek, modern tourist destination with real curb appeal.

On the 1st, the county announced it had been selected for Jeollanam-do’s 2026 Aging Tourist Sites Revitalization Project and secured 1.8 billion KRW (approximately 1.35 million USD) in funding.

Plans call for expanded visitor amenities, refreshed landscapes, cozy rest areas, and clearer walking routes so guests can enjoy a more comfortable and intuitive experience.

The project kicks off with detailed planning this year and will roll out in phases through 2028. Built in 2004, the Cheonghae Port filming set has been a go-to open-location backdrop for hits like the drama Haeshin, The Legend (Taewangsasingi), Jumong, and the film Roaring Currents.

Officials hope the revamp will not only draw more tourists but also attract new film and TV productions. By linking the site with nearby attractions such as Wando Arboretum and the coastal Route 77, they aim to maximize synergy, raise the region’s profile, and stimulate the local economy.

With famous filming locations increasingly turning into national tourist magnets and local economic drivers, Wando County expects this initiative to help restore Cheonghae Port’s former prominence and ignite a fresh tourism boom.

An official from Wando County said, “We’ll refurbish aging facilities and add compelling features to make the Cheonghae Port filming set a spot people want to return to. Our goal is to build a distinct advantage by blending the film industry with tourism.”
