The Public — Reporter Oh Hong-ji] China’s largest low-cost carrier, Spring Airlines, is launching a new Cheongju–Shanghai (Pudong) scheduled route on the 24th and plans to expand to daily service in June. The move could be a turning point for Cheongju International Airport as it grows its international network and aims to become a central-region hub.

Spring Airlines held a route-launch press conference at Cheongju International Airport on the 9th and will begin official service on the Cheongju–Shanghai (Pudong) route on the 24th.

The airline will start with six weekly flights (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun) and will add Wednesday flights from June 3, moving to daily operations.

That means more schedule flexibility for travelers and a likely boost in business exchanges between the two cities.

A provincial official called the arrival of a global carrier a major milestone for positioning Cheongju Airport as a central-region hub, adding that the direct Shanghai link should help attract Chinese tourists and revitalize the local economy.

Spring Airlines began as a travel agency in 1981 and entered aviation in 2004. Today it’s China’s largest low-cost carrier and currently operates routes to Jeju, Busan, and Incheon.

A Spring Airlines spokesperson said the carrier chose Cheongju because of the airport’s growth potential and pledged to do more than just operate flights — aiming to expand inbound tourism and support local economic growth.
