The 2026 Gunpo Azalea Festival, where bright pink azaleas that symbolize Gunpo City dress the downtown, opens on April 18 and kicks off a nine-day celebration. Now in its 12th year, the festival has upgraded its digital tech and nighttime light displays so visitors can savor spring around the clock.
The festival runs April 18–26 across Azalea Hill, Azalea Park and the car-free street area. The opening ceremony is set for 7:00 p.m. on April 18 at a special stage on Azalea Hill. Singers Lee Seung-gi and Park Jung-hyun will take the stage to heat up the spring night. From midnight on April 18 through 10:00 p.m. on April 19, the stretch from the 8-danji intersection to the fire station intersection will be a designated car-free zone. That area will host Azalea Food, with food trucks; the Azalea Market, showcasing local small-business products; and the Azalea Stage, featuring street performances. Visitors can stroll the city center, trading traffic noise for music and floral scents.
This year’s program goes beyond simple flower viewing with a big push for hands-on experiences. A light-up system highlights the azaleas’ vivid colors after dark. In the Azalea Park tunnel, interactive lights respond to visitors’ movements and sounds for extra visual fun. QR codes at key spots link to a Smart Garden service with details on azalea varieties and the history of Gunpo’s blooms. From tech-savvy young adults to families, everyone can explore the festival at their own pace.
Gunpo City is concentrating administrative resources to handle large crowds. On April 16, about 40 staff from the Suridong Administrative Welfare Center and neighborhood association leaders completed a major cleanup, collecting trash and checking sidewalks near Surisan Station and Azalea Hill. Mayor Ha Eun-ho visited the site to review stage placement, visitor flow and traffic control plans. Officials also finished prechecks for defects on facilities like stairs and observation decks. The city says it will quickly fix any issues before the opening to ensure a safe, incident-free festival.
The festival also aims to be accessible regardless of income. The city will operate 56 vendor booths that accept the integrated cultural voucher (Munhwa Nuri Card), a cultural-welfare card for basic livelihood recipients and near-poor households. Visitors can use the card for cookie-making and craft workshops and to buy everyday cultural items like rayon products and cosmetics. Card payment will also be available for foods such as Korean sweet fried chicken (dakgangjeong), churros and coffee. By expanding card acceptance around the Azalea Market and the car-free zone, the city hopes to broaden cultural access for underserved groups while boosting the local economy.
What are azaleas?
Azaleas are deciduous shrubs that grow in mountain areas and can reach 2–5 meters (6.6–16.4 feet) tall. From April through June, they produce pale-pink blooms that appear at the same time as the leaves. Leaves form in clusters of four or five at the branch tips and have an inverted-egg shape. Flowers grow in umbels of three to seven, creating dense swaths of color. Inside the funnel-shaped corolla, red-brown spots attract insects, and five of the ten stamens extend noticeably longer than the others—giving the flower a distinctive look. Because azaleas are sensitive to temperature changes, timing the full bloom is important. Since April 15, the city has posted real-time bloom photos on its official website, so visitors should check online before planning their trip.
